Important: This "KATANA System Program" is not compatible with the KATANA Mk II series.
Version Compatibility Between BOSS TONE STUDIO and the System Program:
If you update the system program to Version 4 or later, please make sure to use BOSS TONE STUDIO Version 4 or later as well.

How to Check the Version
Before you start, check the system program version of your KATANA.
- Turn off the power.
- While holding down the [TAP] button, turn on the POWER switch.
If the indicators light up as shown below, the system is up to date.
When the [POWER CONTROL] switch is set to "0.5W", the "BOOSTER/MOD" indicator lights up.
If the indicators light up differently, please update the system. - After confirming the version, turn off the power.
Do not update the system if it is already up to date.
What you will need to update your KATANA
- KATANA unit
- USB cable
- A computer with a USB connector ( Windows, macOS / OS X )
Caution when performing the update

Never apply this update data to any product other than the first-generation KATANA series. Doing so may damage the system program or data of other products.

Never turn off the power of your KATANA while the update is in progress!!
If a power failure or similar issue occurs during the update, the KATANA may no longer start up in normal operating mode. In such cases, servicing will be required, so please contact your nearest Roland service center.
DOWNLOADING AND UNARCHIVING THE COMPRESSED FILE
- Go to UPDATES & DRIVERS and click on KATANA System Program.
- Read the software license agreement at the bottom of the download page and select the "I agree" check box.
- Click the "Download" button to download the system program (katana_sys_vXXX*.zip).
*XXX=Version number - Unarchive the downloaded file.
- Windows: Right-click the file and click "Extract All", then click "Extract".
- macOS: Double-click the file to unzip it.
"katana_sys_vXXX*" folder appears.

Important: Do not rename the extracted file or folder.
UPDATE PROCEDURE
Caution: Never turn off the KATANA's power while the update is in progress. Otherwise the system program or the KATANA itself may be destroyed.
Please install the extracted system program files into your KATANA according to the following procedure.
- Make sure the KATANA is powered off.
- Turn the [MASTER] knob all the way down to minimum.
- While holding down both the [CH1] and [PANEL] Tone Setting buttons, turn on the POWER switch.
The indicators for the [CH1] through [CH4] buttons will begin to flash. - Connect your computer to the KATANA's USB port using a USB cable.
The indicators for the [CH1] through [CH4] buttons will stop flashing and remain lit, and a BOSS_KATANA drive will appear on your computer. - Open the BOSS_KATANA drive.
Note: On some systems, the drive may appear as Removable Disk (*:). - Copy (drag and drop) all the files inside the katana_sys_vXXX folder into the BOSS_KATANA drive.
Note: Do not copy the katana_sys_vXXX folder itself. - Safely disconnect the BOSS_KATANA drive from your computer:
- Windows: See the article “Safely remove hardware in Windows” on the Microsoft website.
- Drag the BOSS_KATANA icon to the Trash icon in the Dock.
- Disconnect the USB cable.
The [PANEL] button will begin flashing. - Press the [PANEL] button to start the update.
While the update is in progress, the EFFECTS indicators will light up.
When the update is complete, the EFFECTS indicators will flash slowly in unison. - Turn off the power of the KATANA.
The update is now complete. The new system program will run the next time you power on the unit.
To confirm that the update was successful, check the version number as described in the “How to Check the Version” section.
