Here's how to update the system program firmware for the SPD-SX and SPD-SX Special Edition (SE).
Details about the changes can be found in the “UPDATE HISTORY” section of the system program download page.
HOW TO CHECK THE SYSTEM PROGRAM VERSION
Please check the current version of the system program on your SPD-SX before downloading the file.
- Press the [MENU] button.
The MENU screen appears. - Use the cursor buttons to select "UTIL", then press the [ENTER] button.
The UTILITY screen appears. - Use the cursor buttons to select "INFORMATION", then press the [ENTER] button.
The INFORMATION screen appears. - Look at the version number on the VERSION line.
*If the latest version is shown, no update is necessary.
WHAT YOU NEED FOR THE UPDATE
- SPD-SX
- USB flash drive (Roland M-UF2G or Commercially available USB flash drive (Up to 32 GB))
*Format the USB flash drive to the FAT32 file system (on Mac: "MS-DOS (FAT)") before using it. - A computer with a USB connector (Windows, Mac)
CAUTION WHEN PERFORMING THE UPDATE
- Never use this update on any other product than the SPD-SX, as it may harm other devices' data or system programs.
- Never power off your SPD-SX while the update is in progress!
If a power failure or similar accident occurs during the update process, the SPD-SX may not start up in normal operating mode, which requires servicing. If this occurs, contact the Roland service center near you.
DOWNLOADING AND UNARCHIVING THE COMPRESSED FILE
- Go to SPD-SX UPDATES & DRIVERS page and click on SPD-SX System Program.
- Read the software license agreement at the bottom of the download page and select the "I agree" checkbox.
- Click the "Download" button to download the system program (spdsx_sys_vXXX*.zip).
*XXX=Version number - Unarchive the downloaded file.
- Windows: Right-click the file and click "Extract All", then click "Extract".
- macOS: Double-click the file to unzip it.

- Open the "spdsx_sys_vXXX" folder and copy "_BOOTPRG.ES_" to the level displayed immediately on accessing the USB flash drive (the USB flash drive's root directory).
*Never double-click "_BOOTPRG.ES_" displayed inside the folder after unarchiving or changing the file name.
*Be sure not to copy the entire extracted folder.
UPDATE PROCEDURE

- Turn off the SPD-SX.
- Connect the USB flash drive containing the "_BOOTPRG.ES_" file to the USB MEMORY connector on the SPD-SX.
- Hold down the [ALL SOUND OFF], [QUICK], and [EXIT] buttons and turn on the SPD-SX.
*Keep holding down the [ALL SOUND OFF] button, the [QUICK] button, and the [EXIT] button until "SPD-SX UPDATER" appears on display.
The update starts automatically. - When "Turn power off and on again" appears on display, turn off the SPD-SX.
- Remove the USB flash drive from the USB MEMORY connector.
- Turn on the SPD-SX and confirm it has been updated to the latest version.
