SH-4d: How to update system program firmware

Here's how to update the system program firmware for the SH-4d.

Details about the changes can be found in the “UPDATE HISTORY” section of the SH-4d System Program download page.

Before you start, check the system program version of your SH-4d.

1. Turn on the SH-4d.
   -If you operate the unit on USB bus power, connect it to your computer via a USB cable.
2. See #1 in the figure below; Hold down the [SHIFT] button and press the [16] button.
   
   -The MENU screen appears.
3. See #2 in the figure above; Turn the [1] and [2] knobs to select "INFORMATION" and press the [ENTER] button.
   -The current version is shown.
   * Don't perform the update if the product is already up-to-date.
4. Turn off the SH-4d.

WHAT YOU WILL NEED TO UPDATE YOUR SH-4d

• SH-4d unit
• USB Type-C to USB Type-A cable (Included with product)
  -A USB cable supporting data communication is required.
• Computer (Windows or Mac)

CAUTION

• Never apply this update data to any product other than the SH-4d. This update data may destroy the data or system program of other products.
• Never power-off your SH-4d while the update is in progress!
  If a power failure or similar accident occurs during the update process, the SH-4d won’t be able to start up in normal operating mode. This will require servicing, so you will need to contact Roland service center near you if this occurs.

UPDATE PROCEDURE

Follow the steps below:

1. Access the "SH-4d System Programs" page to download the compressed file (sh4d_sys_vXXX*.zip).
   *XXX = current version number listed
2. Unzip the file.
   Windows: Right-click the file and select "Extract All".
   Mac: Double-click to unzip the file.
   -The "sh4d_sys_vXXX" folder contains a BIN file appears.
   -Do not rename the BIN file in the extracted folder.
3. Turn the power off of the SH-4d and connect it to your computer with the included USB cable.
4. While holding down the [SHIFT] button, turn on the power.
   - “SH-4d Updater” is displayed on the screen, and the SH-4d is recognized as an external drive on your computer.
5. Open the folder named “sh4d_sys_vXXX” that was created when you extracted the update file in step 2.
6. Copy the SH4d_UPA_up.bin file inside the folder to the root level of the SH-4D drive (the location shown immediately when you access the drive on your computer).
   Note: On macOS, the external drive may not appear on the desktop depending on your system settings. For more information, see "See the devices connected to your Mac".
7. Confirm that copying is complete, then:
   Windows: Right-click the “SH-4D” icon on your computer and click “Eject”.
   Mac: Drag the SH-4d icon on the desktop into Trash.
   Note: Do not unplug the USB cable after ejecting the drive. Keep it connected.
8. Press the [SHIFT] button on the SH-4d.
   
   -The update starts automatically, and progress is displayed on the SH-4d screen. It may take approximately three minutes.
9. When "Turn power off" appears, turn the power back on.
