Update the system program firmware on the BOSS Gigcaster 8 (GCS-8) using a computer. See "Gigcaster 8 GCS-8 System Programs" for the update history.
Check your current version
- On the home screen, touch <
> (MENU).
The MENU screen appears. - Touch SETUP, then GENERAL.
The current System Program version appears next to VERSION.
Do not perform the update if the unit is already up to date.
What you need
- The Gigcaster 8 unit
- A USB cable that supports data transfer
- A computer with a USB 2.0 or 3.0 port (Windows or Mac)
CAUTION
- Do not apply this update to any product other than the Gigcaster 8. It may damage the data or system program of other products.
- Do not turn off the Gigcaster 8 while the update is in progress. If power is lost during the update, the unit will not start in normal operating mode and will require servicing at a Roland service center.
Download and unarchive the update file
Note: XXX in the file and folder names below represents the version number (for example, gcs8_sys_v200.zip).
- Go to GIGCASTER 8 UPDATES & DRIVERS and select Gigcaster8 GCS-8 System Program.
- Read the software license agreement and select "I AGREE."
- Click Download File to get the system program (gcs8_sys_vXXX.zip).
- Unarchive the downloaded file.
- Windows: Right-click the file and click "Extract All", then click "Extract".

macOS: Double-click the file to unzip it.
This creates a "gcs8_sys_vXXX" folder. Do not double-click or rename any files inside this folder.
Install the update
- Turn off the Gigcaster 8.
- While pressing the [
] (mark) button, turn on the power.
"PREPARING..." appears on the display. - Connect the Gigcaster 8 to your computer with a USB cable.
The message changes to "CONNECTED," and the unit is recognized as an external drive (GCS-8_INT). - Open the "gcs8_sys_vXXX" folder and drag all files onto the GCS-8_INT drive icon.
- Once copying is complete, safely eject the drive.
- Windows: See "Safely remove hardware in Windows" (Microsoft) and disconnect the USB cable.

Mac: Drag the GCS-8_INT icon on the desktop into Trash, and disconnect the USB cable.
The update starts automatically.
- When "UPDATE ?" appears on the Gigcaster 8 display, press the REC button.
The message changes to "WRITING...". - When the message changes to "COMPLETE," turn off the power.
