This article is for keyboard, synth or other MIDI Master Control devices connecting from MIDI OUTPUT to the MIDI INPUT of GM-800. The synth/MIDI Master Controller needs to send MIDI CC Note Value to the GM-800 on a shared MIDI Channel.
-
Connect the keyboard/synth MIDI OUT: with a 5pin MIDI cable to the MIDI INPUT: on the GM-800.
For your MIDI CONTROLLER or keyboard/synth, it needs to be set to MIDI CH: 1, or the same MIDI Channel as the GM-800, and needs to be able to send MIDI CC note value via 5pin MIDI cable to the GM-800. So first set the keyboard/synth to MIDI CH: 1 set up so that MIDI TX/TRANSMIT as
MIDI PC/CC/CC NOTE: ON. There may or may not be a MIDI menu item for this, refer to your keyboard/synth brand and model support documentation for assistance with your other brand gear. -
Set MIDI parameters on the GM-800.
- Press the [MENU] button.
- Press the PAGE RIGHT [>] button, go to MIDI MENU.
- Press the knob [4] for MIDI, then press the knob [1] for the MIDI SETTING menu.
- Use the [SELECT KNOB] clockwise to go down to the bottom row for NOTE SRC in the bottom left corner, then adjust the NOTE SRC from GK IN, to MIDI for MIDI INPUT.
This should allow the GM-800 to be triggered by the external MIDI CONTROLLER sending MIDI CC note data via MIDI 5 pin Out > to the MIDI INPUT of the GM-800.
NOTE: The GK INPUT will be disabled (make sure to set this back to GK INPUT when reconnecting a GK-5 or GKC-AD for proper functionality and triggering). - Use the [SELECT] knob and set all the SCENES and PARTS to MIDI CH: 1 as well.
By default, these are all set to different MIDI Channels, which is ok if you have a MIDI controller with alternate options for MIDI CHANNEL control, but for easiest/simplest set up, set your keyboard/synth to transmit all down one MIDI CH: 1 for the MIDI CC note data to the GM-800 on MIDI CH: 1. - Set the parameters as follows:
This will now let you trigger all the PARTS and RHYTHM tones
NOTE: Depending on the SCENE chosen/selected, there may be some PARTS/RHYTHM TONES, ON or OFF, so what tones are triggered, are dependent on what is ON/OFF and WRITE/saved to the SCENE/patch.
- SCENE RX/RECEIVE CHANNEL: 1
- PT1 RX CH: 1
- PT2 RX CH: 1
- PT3 RX CH: 1
- PT4 RX CH: 1
- PT R/RHYTHM RX CH: to 1
- Connect headphones to the GM-800 L/MONO OUTPUT or use both the LEFT and R/MONO output to a mixer/ 2 amps / 2 channels for monitoring the GM-800 and sounds in stereo.
- Press the [MENU] button.
