BOSS Compact Pedals, including but not limited to the DS-1, RC-5, CP-1X and CE-2W, can be powered by a 9V dry alkaline battery.
As standard, all BOSS compact stompbox pedals have a 9V dry alkaline battery installed from the factory and PSA/PSB power supply is sold separately. Since the original battery is used for testing purposes. it is good practice to change out this factory provided battery as soon as possible as the battery and swap it for a brand new 9V dry alkaline quality battery.
When operating on battery power only, the CHECK indicator LED will dim as the power gets too low.
NOTE:
Batteries should always be installed or replaced before connecting any other devices. This way, you can prevent malfunction and damage to your pedal.
Here's how to install a battery in your BOSS Compact Pedal.
-
Hold the pedal down and loosen the thumbscrew, then open the pedal upwards.
You don't need to take the thumbscrew out completely to open the pedal. - Remove the old battery from the battery housing and remove the snap cord attached to it.
-
Connect the battery snap cord to the new battery and place the battery inside the battery housing.
Take care in observing the battery's polarity (+ versus -). -
Slip the coil spring onto the base on the back of the pedal and then close the pedal.
Carefully avoid getting the snap cord caught in the pedal, coil spring and battery housing. - Hold down the pedal while tightening the thumbscrew into the guide bush hole.
Use of battery
- Use dry alkaline batteries if you are running the unit on battery power.
- If you handle the battery improperly, you risk explosion and fluid leakage. Make sure that you carefully observe all the items related to batteries that are listed in “USING THE UNIT SAFELY” and “IMPORTANT NOTES” (the leaflet “USING THE UNIT SAFELY”).
- The sound may distort if the battery is nearly depleted. This is not a malfunction. If this happens, replace the battery or use the AC adaptor (sold separate Roland BOSS PSA/PSB power supply).
- The batteries tend to drain faster when the USB port or the PHONES jack is being used, so we recommend using an AC adaptor.
After installing the battery test and check your BOSS compact stompbox pedal for proper functionality with the new 9V dry alkaline battery:
Make sure to connect your Guitar/Bass/Instrument OUTPUT, to INPUT / INPUT A (MONO INPUT), and not the INPUT B / MEMORY / SHIFT/ CTL / EXP jack.
The INPUT typically is the POWER ON/OFF for BOSS compact stompbox pedals with exception to a few pedals. For example, our BOSS RC pedals, use the OUTPUT A jack cable connection for POWER ON/OFF.
Connect GUITAR OUTPUT > to INPUT: BOSS compact: OUTPUT > to INPUT: AMP.
Then test and check guitar audio signal and pedal effect ON/OFF.
When the pedal is not in use, or if taking a long set break, and using 9V battery power only; always make sure to disconnect the cable from INPUT / INPUT A (or for RC pedals from OUTPUT A jack) so that it powers OFF the BOSS compact pedal, and doesn't drain the battery while not in use.
Establish all audio connections using only 1/4" TS unbalanced guitar/instrument cables.
For example use our BIC/ BOSS Lifetime Instrument Cables or similar quality instrument cables: https://www.boss.info/us/search/?q=BIC
DO NOT use 1/4" TRS stereo balanced cables for any audio connections as these will be incorrect for audio signal transfer.
Only use 1/4" TRS cables for the STOP/MEMORY SHIFT jack when connecting a sold separately cable and BOSS FS-6 / FS-7 dual foot switch.
