The SE-70 functions as a true vocoder, complete with up to 21 frequency bands
to adjust the volumes of each individual frequency range. Vocoders can create
robotic sounds as well as other interesting effects. The concept of a vocoder
is quite simple. You connect an audio source into one of the inputs, the left
input in the case of the SE-70. This audio source can literally be anything
from a synthesizer, drum machine, weird sound effect, or the sound of traffic
during rush hour. Into the other input, you connect another signal which is
usually a microphone, although a guitar or other audio source is fair game. By
talking or singing into the microphone while the other signal is being fed into
the SE-70, your voice takes on the frequency characteristics and pitch of the
source sound. For example, if youre playing a brass sound on a synthesizer,
your voice is sounded as the pitches that are being played from the keyboard,
and takes on brass characteristics. This is a great effect, especially when you
start getting crazy and doing things such as feeding a drum machine into the
source input, and making your guitar take on the characteristics of drums
played back as a rhythmic pattern. There are two different Vocoder Algorithms
in the SE-70. The first is a 12 band with additional effects including reverb,
chorus and delay. It also has a special type of distortion that really makes
the effect sound intense. The second Vocoder Algorithm is a 21 band vocoder
with reverb. It is much clearer and more articulate than Vocoder 1 but it is
not as radical.
