STUDIO-CAPTURE, UA-1610: Connecting Two STUDIO-CAPTURE's Together (Mac)

If you connect two STUDIO-CAPTURE units to a computer, you’ll be able to use them as a 32-in/20-out audio interface. The following procedure will guide you through setting up two STUDIO-CAPTUREs to be used simultaneously with Mac.

NOTE: 

• The STUDIO-CAPTURE driver must be installed prior to following the setup below. You may install the driver from the included setup disc or download the driver by clicking here.
• A maximum of two STUDIO-CAPTURE units can be synchronized.
• When using two units, they cannot be used with the 96 and 192 kHz setting.

Before you start making settings, disconnect both STUDIO-CAPTURE units from the computer and turn off their power.

1. Switch on the power to the second STUDIO-CAPTURE unit. The second STUDIO-CAPTURE unit will be the timing master.
2. Specify the sampling rate of your choice:
         a. Press the VALUE knob to access the SYSTEM screen.
         b. Use the CURSOR arrow buttons to choose “SAMPLE RATE.”
         c. Turn the VALUE knob to change the sample rate to a desired setting.
   
   
3. Use the CURSOR arrow buttons and VALUE knob to make the following system settings:
   
   
   
4. Turn off the power to this second STUDIO-CAPTURE unit and the power back on.
5. Switch on the power to the first STUDIO-CAPTURE unit.
6. Set the first unit to the same sampling rate as the second unit and then make the following settings in the SYSTEM screen:
   
7. In order to digitally synchronize the two units, use a digital coaxial cable to connect the second unit’s COAXIAL OUT (9/10) to the first unit’s COAXIAL IN (15/16).
   NOTE: Be sure to use a digital coaxial cable and not an analog RCA cable.
8. Connect the both STUDIO-CAPTURE units to the computer.
   NOTE: Connect the two USB cables to USB ports that are near each other.
   

9. Make the following Mac MIDI Settings:
   
   STUDIO-CAPTURE (First Unit)

   1. In the Mac OS Finder, open the [Applications] folder, then the [Utilities] folder and then double-click [Audio MIDI Setup].
   2. Click [Show MIDI Window] in the [Window] menu to display the “MIDI Studio” window.
   3. Confirm that [STUDIO-CAPTURE] appears in the “MIDI Studio” window.
      Note: If [STUDIO-CAPTURE] does not appear or if it is grayed out, click the [Rescan MIDI] icon. You may also try turning the STUDIO-CAPTURE off and then on again.
   4. Click the [Add Device] icon once. One [new external device] icon will appear.
   5. Click on the added [new external device] icon and then click the [Show Info] icon.
   6. Enter “STUDIO-CAPTURE” in the [Device Name] field and then click the [Apply] button.
   7. Using your mouse, drag and connect the  buttons (which represent the input/output ports of each device) of the existing [STUDIO-CAPTURE] and the newly added [STUDIO-CAPTURE] so that they are connected as shown in the figure.
      

    

   STUDIO-CAPTURE (Second Unit)

   9. In the Audio MIDI Setup window, click the [Add Device] icon once. One [new external device] icon will appear.
   10. Click on the added [new external device] icon and then click the [Show Info] icon.
   11. Enter “STUDIO-CAPTURE EXP” in the [Device Name] field and then click the [Apply] button.
   12. Using your mouse, drag and connect the   buttons of the existing [STUDIO-CAPTURE EXP] and the newly added [STUDIO-CAPTURE EXP].
   
   Creating an Aggregate Device
   
   1. In the Mac OS Finder, open the [Applications] folder, then the [Utilities] folder, and then double-click [Audio MIDI Setup].
   2. Click the [+] button and click “Create an Aggregate Device.” “Aggregate Device” will appear in the list.
   3. Double-click on “Aggregate Device” and then change the device set name to “STUDIO-CAPTURES.”
   4. From the audio devices at the right, add a check mark to “Use” for “STUDIO-CAPTURE” and then for “STUDIO-CAPTURE EXP.”
   5. If there is a clock source field, choose “STUDIO-CAPTURE EXP.”
   6. If a check mark has been placed in the Resample field or the Drift Connection field, clear the check mark.
10. Connect your headphones to the PHONES jack of the first STUDIO-CAPTURE unit. The number of audio ports will increase, allowing you to record and play back using 32-in/20-out.
    

Settings for monitoring through headphones

1. Start up the STUDIO-CAPTURE Control Panel found in the Applications folder.
2. In the lower left of the monitor mixer control screen, click the [STUDIO-CAPTURE EXP] button.
   
   The state of the second STUDIO-CAPTURE unit will be shown.
   
   
3. From the “Device” menu, choose [Open the Patchbay]. The PATCHBAY screen appears.
4. In the OUTPUT 9–10 field, choose “MONITOR A.”
5. Close the screen.
6. In the lower left of the screen, click the [STUDIO-CAPTURE] button.
   
   The state of the first STUDIO-CAPTURE unit will be shown.
   
   
7. Switch to the direct mixer control screen, and check to make sure that the sliders for channels 15–16 of DIRECT MIXER A are sufficiently raised.
8. In order to monitor in stereo, set the channel 15 PAN to far left (100%L) and the channel 16 PAN to far right (100%R).
9. From the “Device” menu, choose [Open the Patchbay]. The PATCHBAY screen will appear.
10. Make sure that “MONITOR A” is selected in the OUTPUT 1–2 field.
    If something else is selected, change it to “MONITOR A.”
    All input signals of the second STUDIO-CAPTURE unit will be output from the PHONES jack of the first unit.
