External CD Drive:
The Roland SCSI CD Burners that were made and serviced by QPS have all been discontinued. The best place to find these drives would be the used market (e.g. eBay, Craig's List, etc). The CD enclosures that were compatible were the VS-CDR II or the VS-CDR III--which could have contained different drive mechanisms inside depending on when it was manufactured.
Note:
- External CD drives require driver software to be installed into the operating system of a VS recorder in order for the VS and external CD drive to communicate--just like driver software needs to be installed on a computer in order for a USB printer to work with a computer. Because of this, only VS-CDR II or VS-CDR III drives are compatible and 3rd party drives will not work.
- Due to the age of these legacy products, we no longer have a resource for purchasing these CD drives and they cannot be purchased new. The best place to search for a used VS-CDR II or VS-CDR III would be online such as eBay, craigslist.com, etc.
External Hard Drive:
Note: Due to the age of the products, we do not have resources for where to acquire drives.
Most SCSI hard drives that adhere to 'AV' specifications will work with the VS Recorders. Keep in mind, drives that do not meet 'AV' specs, though not recommended for recording and playback, are often still reliable for data storage.
Suggested specifications for external SCSI hard drives are as follows:
- 120GB maximum. Larger drives are not compatible.
- 13 ms Access Time
- No or Intelligent Recalibration
- Active Termination
- 1:1 Interleave
- Slip Sectoring
- Macintosh Compatible

Note: This guide was written during the VS recorders' time of production and manufacturers may no longer have these products available or the specifications may have changed: VS Series Compatible Media Guide
Additional Notes:
- The SCSI port on the back panel is designed to connect to external drives and cannot be used to connect to a computer.
