The R-05/R-09HR allows you to connect an external stereo or mono microphone for recording. The type of connections and settings needed will depend on the type of microphone you are using. The following will guide you through the proper connections and settings in the R-05/R-09HR for common microphone types:
Note: If you are using a condenser microphone that requires Phantom Power, you will need to connect the condenser mic to the input of an external phantom power box. The output of this phantom power box will then connect to the R-05/R-09HR’s MIC input jack using the appropriate adapter below. These phantom power boxes can be purchased at most musical instrument stores or online.
SETTINGS FOR THE TYPE OF MICROPHONE
Mono vs Stereo
Here’s how to switch the mono/stereo setting as appropriate for the mic that’s connected to the MIC jack:
-
Press the [MENU] button.
-
Use the and buttons to select “Input Setup” and then press the red button.
-
Use the and buttons to move the cursor to the EXT Mic Type setting and then use the and buttons to choose either MONO or STEREO.
-
Press the [MENU] button twice.
Mic Gain
It's recommended to start with the MIC GAIN switch set to "H" (or high) to get a good volume level when recording:
If the audio is distorting, you can try setting this to "L" (or low).
Plug-in Power
Certain microphones require 2.5 volts called "Plug-in Power", to operate. These can include lavalier and small hand-held microphones. Check the documentation of the microphone you're using to determine if Plug-In power is required. Here's how to turn on Plug-in Power:
-
Press the [MENU] button.
-
Use the and buttons to select “Input Setup” and then press the red button.
-
Use the and buttons to move the cursor to the Plug-in Power setting and then use the and buttons to choose ON.
-
Press the [MENU] button twice.
CONNECTIONS
-
XLR Connections:
Mono: If your mono mic has an XLR output, you can use an XLR Female to ⅛” Stereo Mini Male adapter to connect the mic to the R-05/R-09HR’s MIC input jack:
Stereo: If you want to record in stereo (e.g. a stereo mic that has two XLR outputs or using two microphones to record in stereo), you can use a Dual XLR Female to ⅛” Stereo Mini Male adapter to connect the mics to the R-05/R-09HR’s MIC input jack:
-
1/4” Connections:
Mono: If your mono mic has a ¼” output, you can use a 1/4” Female to 1/8” Stereo Mini Male adapter to connect the mic to the R-05/R-09HR’s MIC input jack:
Stereo: If you want to record in stereo (e.g. a stereo mic that has two 1/4” outputs or using two microphones to record in stereo), you can use a Dual 1/4” Female to 1/8” Stereo Mini Male adapter to connect the mics to the R-05/R-09HR’s MIC input jack:
Important Note: Be sure that you are using a “stereo breakout” adapter and NOT a “splitter” adapter. You will want to be sure that this adapter separates (breaks out) the tip and the ring of the 1/8” connector (as shown in the image above).
