The following will guide through setting up the BR-1200CD to synchronize with recording software.
Note: To synchronize the BR-1200CD with a computer, a MIDI interface (or audio interface that has MIDI IN & OUT) and MIDI cable are required. You may view Roland's MIDI interface line here:
Roland MIDI Interfaces
If you would like to pass audio to or from the BR-1200CD and a computer, an audio interface that includes MIDI IN & OUT is necessary:
Roland Audio Interfaces
BR-1200CD as MASTER
This will setup the BR-1200CD to control audio software so that when you press PLAY, STOP, REW, FF on the BR-1200CD, the software will respond and follow.
- Connect a MIDI cable from the MIDI output of the BR-1200CD to the MIDI input of the MIDI interface (or audio interface that includes MIDI IN) that is connected to your computer.
Note: Be sure to install the interface's driver software, the interfaces requires this, prior to following the instructions below. Refer to the interfaces documentation for these instructions. - On the BR-1200CD, press UTILITY.
- CURSOR to the SYNC icon, and then press ENTER/YES.
- Use the TIME/VALUE wheel to change the 'Sync Generator' parameter:
- Select "MTC" (MIDI Time Code) if you would like the times of the BR-1200CD and the audio software to synchronize (in terms of hours, minutes, seconds and frames). This is useful if you're simply passing audio.
- Select "MIDI CLOCK" if you would like the beats and measures of the BR-1200CD and the audio software to synchronize. This is used only if you've using the BR-1200CD's internal drums or metronome and you want the audio software's MIDI clock to synchronize. If you're not using the BR-1200CD's internal drums/metronome or you just need to pass audio, use MTC and not MIDI CLOCK. - If MTC was selected, CURSOR to "MTC Type" and use the TIME/VALUE wheel to select "30". This sets MTC to 30 frames per second.
- Press EXIT/NO and then CURSOR to the MIDI icon. Press ENTER/YES .
- CURSOR to MMC Mode and use the TIME/VALUE wheel to select 'Master'.
- Press EXIT/NO to return the main screen.
- Now setup the audio software that you're using to slave to MTC at 30 frames per second OR slave to MIDI Clock. Also, set the audio software slave to MMC. Refer to the audio software's documentation or online help for these instructions. Not all audio software has this functionality.
- After setting up the audio software to slave, the BR-1200CD's transport (i.e. PLAY, STOP, REW, FF) will control the audio software.
Note:
- If you would like to pass audio out of the BR-1200CD and into the audio software, connect the red and white LINE OUT jacks on the BR-1200CD into two inputs on the audio interface connected to your computer. Refer to the audio software's documentation for instructions regarding setting up an audio interface's inputs for recording into tracks.
- If you would like to pass audio from the audio software into the BR-1200CD, connect the audio outputs of the audio interface into the 1/4" inputs of the BR-1200CD. Refer to the audio software's documentation for instructions regarding setting up an audio interface to output audio from tracks.
BR-1200CD as SLAVE
This will setup the audio software to control the BR-1200CD by playing from audio software.
- Connect a MIDI cable from the MIDI output of the MIDI interface (or audio interface that includes MIDI OUT) connected to your computer to the MIDI input of the BR-1200CD.
Note: Be sure to install the interface's driver software, the interfaces requires this, prior to following the instructions below. Refer to the interfaces documentation for these instructions. - On the BR-1200CD, press UTILITY.
- CURSOR to the SYNC icon, and press ENTER/YES.
- CURSOR to the MTC SLAVE parameter and use the TIME/VALUE wheel to set it to 'On.'
- Press EXIT/NO and then CURSOR to the MIDI icon. Press the ENTER/YES button.
- Set the MMC MODE to "Off".
- Press EXIT/NO to return the main screen.
- Now setup the audio software that you're using to send MTC. Refer to the audio software's documentation or online help for these instructions.
Note: The BR-1200CD can only synchronize/slave to MTC and cannot synchronize/slave to MIDI Clock. - After setting up the audio software to send MTC, press PLAY on the BR-1200CD. The BR-1200CD will pause and wait for MTC to be sent to its MIDI IN. Begin playing from the audio software.
