The following article will guide through synchronizing an external MIDI device and the VS recorder. The steps will differ depending on whether the VS is Master (controlling the external device) or Slave (the external device is controlling the VS).

VS-2480 / VS-2400CD as MASTER

CONNECTIONS

1. Connect the MIDI OUT of the VS-2480 or VS-2400CD to the MIDI IN of the external MIDI device.

VS-2480/VS-2400CD SETUP

1. VS-2480: Press the UTILITY button.
   VS-2400CD: Hold SHIFT and then press the UTILITY button.
2. Press F6 (SYNC). Note: If SYNC does not appear above F6, press the PAGE button until SYNC appears.
3. Cursor to the MIDI OUT SYNC Gen. box, and with the Time/Value dial, select MTC (MIDI Time Code).
4. Press F6 (EXIT).
5. Press F5 (MIDI).
6. Cursor to the MIDI OUT/THRU box and use the TIME/VALUE dial to select Out.
7. Cursor to the SysEx.Tx Sw box and use the TIME/VALUE dial, turn it ON.
8. Cursor to MMC MODE and set it to MASTER.
9. Cursor to MMC SOURCE and set it to MIDI.
10. Press the HOME/DISPLAY button to exit and return to the main screen.

EXTERNAL MIDI DEVICE SETUP
You must now make the settings in the external MIDI device to receive and slave to MTC (MIDI Time Code) and MMC (MIDI Machine Control) through its MIDI IN. Check the documentation or the device manufacturer's online help for these instructions.

VS-2480 / VS-2400CD as SLAVE

CONNECTIONS

1. Connect the MIDI OUT of the external MIDI device to the MIDI IN of the VS-2480 or VS-2400CD .

VS-2480/VS-2400CD SETUP

1. VS-2480: Press the UTILITY button.
   VS-2400CD: Hold SHIFT and then press the UTILITY button.
2. Press F5 (MIDI).
3. Cursor to the SysEx.Rx Sw box and use the TIME/VALUE dial, turn it ON.
4. Cursor to MMC MODE and set it to SLAVE.
5. Cursor to MMC SOURCE and set it to MIDI.
6. Press the HOME/DISPLAY button to exit and return to the main screen.
7. Press the EXT SYNC button on the front panel so that it illuminates.
   
   Note: If the external MIDI device does not support MMC (MIDI Machine Control), press the PLAY button on the VS so that the button blinks. The VS will pause waiting for MIDI Time Code (MTC) to be received into it's MIDI IN.

EXTERNAL MIDI DEVICE SETUP
You must now make the settings in the external MIDI device to send MTC (MIDI Time Code) and MMC (MIDI Machine Control) through the external MIDI device's MIDI OUT. Check the documentation or the device manufacturer's online help for these instructions.

Note: The VS-2480 & VS2400CD can only sync to MTC and will not sync to any other format--such as MIDI Clock.
