The binaural audio recording technique recreates the way we actually hear sounds in our environment. This is accomplished by recording the audio source with microphones placed directly at the position of each ear. On playback, listeners using stereo headphones or earphones enjoy a realistic 3D audio experience, with sounds coming from all directions in a simulated 360-degree space. Audio recorded with the binaural process is compatible with playback through freestanding stereo speakers, but the multi-dimensional effect is more pronounced on headphones and earphones.
