The following article will troubleshoot in the event that a lavalier microphone is not providing audio to the R-05.
- Be sure that the mic is connected to the MIC jack and not the LINE IN jack.
- If the lavalier requires plug-in power (2.5 volts), turn on plug-in power in the R-05:
-
Press the [MENU] button.
-
Use the
and
buttons to select “Input Setup” and then press the red button.
-
Use the
and
buttons to move the cursor to the Plug-in Power setting and then use the
and
buttons to choose ON.
-
Press the [MENU] button twice.
-
- Check that the microphone doesn't require more than 2.5 volts of power (also known as "plug-in power")--as the R-05 supplies no more than 2.5 volts. Refer to the microphone's documentation or contact the microphone manufacturer for information regarding how to power their lavalier mic.
- Set the external mic setting to mono or stereo. Check the documentation of the microphone being used to determine if it's a mono or stereo microphone:
-
Press the [MENU] button.
-
Use the
and
buttons to select “Input Setup” and then press the red button.
-
Use the
and
buttons to move the cursor to the EXT Mic Type setting and then use the
and
buttons to choose MONO or STEREO.
-
Press the [MENU] button twice.
-
- The R-05 is compatible with TRS (stereo) or TS (mono) microphones only. LIke other manufacturer's field recorders, the R-05 is not compatible with TRRS connectors. Check with the lavalier manufacturer and be sure that the microphone is wired with a TRS or TS connector and not TRRS.
Note: If the lavalier is designed for cel phones specifically, it will most likely not work--as it's likely wired for TRRS. - It's recommended to start with the MIC GAIN switch set to "H" (high) on the back of the R-05 to get a good volume level when recording.
If the audio is distorting, you can try setting this to "L" (or low).
