Use the GT-1000/GT-1000CORE and your amp's EFFECT LOOP/FX LOOP: SEND/RETURN, to integrate your external AMP's PREAMP sound, with the effect sounds of the GT-1000/GT-1000CORE. You can route the GT-1000/GT-1000CORE's internal effects, before, and after your amp's PREAMP, per preset/patch, if you choose. This is great for routing Delays/Reverb effects, after your external AMP's PREAMP, and Overdrive/Distortion effects before the external AMP's PREAMP INPUT.
NOTE: Four Cable Method (4CM) with the GT-1000/CORE can only be performed with an amp, that has an EFFECTS LOOP: SEND/RETURN option, alternatively labeled as: PREAMP IN / POWER AMP OUT or SEND/RETURN, on the amp's top, front or back panels.
The following items are needed:
- 4 - 10 ft to 15 ft instrument cables, for example our BOSS BIC Instrument Cables.
- GT-1000 / GT-1000CORE
- Amplifier with an Effects Loop: SEND/RETURN
- Roland PSB-1U power supply to power the unit
Use the GT-1000/CORE : SEND/RETURN1 or SEND/RETURN2, either may be used for 4CM.
Please make these connections with your Amplifier and GT-1000/CORE Powered OFF.
Connection method is as follows, using the 4 instrument cables:
- GUITAR/Instrument OUTPUT -> to INPUT : GT-1000/CORE
- GT-1000/CORE SEND1 OUTPUT -> to INPUT : of external AMP
- SEND of external AMP FX LOOP -> to RETURN1 : of GT-1000/CORE
- GT-1000/CORE MAIN OUT L/MONO -> to RETURN : of external AMP FX LOOP
Once these connections are established, you'll need to go into every USER PATCH and edit the EFFECT CHAIN, turn ON the SEND/RETURN1 BLOCK (or SEND/RETURN2 if used), with STEREO LINK: OFF, in order to hear the sound of your external AMP's PREAMP in the GT-1000/CORE effect chain.
Fundamentally, by using 4CM, you are inserting the external AMP's PREAMP into the SEND/RETURN1 BLOCK, so you can then visualize or consider the SEND/RETURN1 BLOCK (GREEN below) your external AMP/PREAMP. It should be noted if using the SEND/RETURN1 as external AMP/PREAMP = ON, then the internal AIRD PREAMPS 1 and 2 should be turned OFF and deactivated (RED below).
When the SEND/RETURN1 is ON, the external AMP/PREAMP sound is used and heard.
Alternatively, if the SEND/RETURN1 is set to OFF(RED below), then the EFFECT CHAIN is outputting directly to the external POWER AMP/FX LOOP: RETURN. So, the internal AIRD PREAMP1 & 2 should be set to ON (GREEN below), to use the digital AIRD PREAMP models, as if outputting to the FX LOOP: RETURN/POWER AMP INPUT of the external AMP.
Both options will have a different sound:
- One sound using the external AMP PREAMP in the GT-1000/CORE EFFECT CHAIN.
- The other sound, bypassing the external AMP PREAMP, with internal GT-1000/CORE AIRD PREAMPS and EFFECTS direct to external AMP FX LOOP: RETURN/POWER AMP INPUT.
So this can be, WRITE/saved on a USER PATCH, to PATCH basis, depending on user preference. For example, one USER PATCH may use the external AMP in the SEND/RETURN1, and then the next USER PATCH may use the internal AIRD PREAMP 1&2, direct to the external POWER AMP. Both provide a hybrid of either: ANALOG PREAMP with DIGITAL FX, or DIGITAL AIRD PREAMP with TUBE/SOLID STATE POWER AMP sound.
CREATING A 4CM USER PATCH TEMPLATE:
Turn the OUTPUT Level knob to the minimum position, and turn ON your GT-1000/CORE and external guitar AMP. Once the GT-1000/CORE is powered ON, choose a patch to INITIALIZE. This will be a blank patch, you can use to create your FOUR CABLE METHOD, preset template patch. To initialize a patch, press the [WRITE] button > select "INITIALIZE" > press knob [1] to select "WRITE", or see the GT-1000/GT-1000CORE Owner's Manual under the Save a Patch section.
Once you INITIALIZE a patch, you can now enter the effect chain, by pressing the [EFFECT] button, navigate to the AIRD PREAMPS 1 and 2, and set them to OFF, then navigate to the SEND/RETURN 1 or 2, which ever is being used for 4CM, set STEREO LINK: OFF, and set them the SEND/RETURN1 to ON.
- Press the EFFECT button on the top panel.
- Use KNOB6 to navigate the effect chain and highlight the AIRD PREAMP 1 or 2.
- Press knob [6] to turn OFF the AIRD PREAMP 1.
- Navigate the menu cursor to highlight the SEND/RETURN 1.
- Press knob [6] to turn ON the SEND/RETURN 1.
Any effects that are before, or to the right side, of the SEND/RETURN 1 BLOCK in the effect chain, are being sent to the INPUT of the external AMP PREAMP. Any effects after the SEND/RETURN 1 BLOCK are being sent to the RETURN of the external AMP Effects Loop. So this allows the user to place NS, OD/DS, other effects positioned before SEND/RETURN1 for INPUT EFFECTS, and then position MODULATION, DELAY, REVERB effects after the SEND/RETURN 1 BLOCK for those effects to be in the EFFECTS LOOP of the external AMP.
Additionally: You can change the AIRD OUTPUT SELECT, which is an output filter that can optimize the GT-1000/CORE to operate/sound better with a specific output device, as a more sophisticated EQ filter.
By default, this is set to LINE/PHONES, however AMP RETURN may be another options to use, since using 4CM.
