The following article will troubleshoot in the event that an external microphone is not providing audio to the R-07.
- Be sure that the mic is connected to the MIC/AUX IN jack on the top of the unit.
- If the external microphone requires plug-in power (2.5 volts), turn on plug-in power in the R-07 (MENU --> "2 Input" --> "Plug In Power").
- Check that the microphone doesn't require more than 2.5 volts of power--as the R-07 supplies no more than 2.5 volts. Please refer to the microphone's documentation for information regarding power requirements.
- Set the External Mic Type in the R-07 to MONO or STEREO (MENU --> "2 Input" --> "EXT Mic Type"). Please check the documentation of the microphone being used to determine if it's a mono or stereo microphone.
- The R-07 is compatible with TRS (stereo) or TS (mono) microphones only. Like other manufacturer's field recorders, the R-07 is not compatible with TRRS connectors. Check with the microphone manufacturer and be sure that the microphone is wired with a TRS or TS connector and not TRRS.
Note: If the microphone is designed for cel phones specifically, it will most likely not work--as it's likely wired for TRRS. - Please note that certain 3.5mm adapters for mics have threading on the end that are designed to be screwed into the audio port of the receiving audio device. Here's an example:
This may prevent the 3.5mm jack from being fully inserted into a standard handheld recorder that does not contain threading (such as the R-07). In this case, that adapter may not be compatible with audio recorders that don't have the same threading. - Be sure that the proper type of cable is being used (if applicable). Please see the "CONNECTIONS" section below.
Adjusting the Input Level
After checking the above setting/specifications:
- Press the red record button so that it's blinking.
- Begin talking or singing into the external microphone.
- While singing or talking, use the INPUT [+] [–] buttons to adjust the recording level. Audio level should appear in the meter:
CONNECTIONS
-
XLR Connections:
Mono: If your mono mic has an XLR output, you can use an XLR Female to ⅛” Stereo Mini Male adapter to connect the mic to the R-07’s MIC/AUX IN jack:
Stereo: If you want to record in stereo (e.g. a stereo mic that has two XLR outputs or using two microphones to record in stereo), you can use a Dual XLR Female to ⅛” Stereo Mini Male adapter to connect the mics to the R-07’s MIC/AUX IN jack:
-
1/4” Connections:
Mono: If your mono mic has a ¼” output, you can use a 1/4” Female to 1/8” Stereo Mini Male adapter to connect the mic to the R-07’s MIC/AUX IN jack:
Stereo: If you want to record in stereo (e.g. a stereo mic that has two 1/4” outputs or using two microphones to record in stereo), you can use a Dual 1/4” Female to 1/8” Stereo Mini Male adapter to connect the mics to the R-07’s MIC/AUX IN input jack:
Important Note: Be sure that you are using a “stereo breakout” adapter and NOT a “splitter” adapter. You will want to be sure that this adapter separates (breaks out) the tip and the ring of the 1/8” connector (as shown in the image above).
