The Sub Instrument feature in the TD-17 allows you to assign two sounds (Instruments) to the head and/or rim of the pads. After assigning a Sub Instrument, you can then choose whether you want both the Main and Sub instruments to play at the same time, velocity switch, or crossfade between each other. Here's how to assign a Sub Instrument to a pad:
- Turn the main dial to choose a Kit that you would like to edit.
- Press the ASSIGN button.
- Press the function 1 (F1) button so there is not a "check mark" in the box next to "H&R ON." Doing this turns off the Head/Rim link feature so you can assign the head and rim of the pad independently.
- Hit the pad - or portion of the pad (head or rim) - that you want to assign a Sub instrument to.
- Press the F3 button (SUB).
- Press F2 to add a check mark in the "SUB ON" box. This turns on the Sub Instrument.
- Press the cursor up button repeatedly until you highlight the Instrument group. (Note, in some kits, the Instrument group and Instrument selections may show as "OFF").
- Turn the dial to select a desired Instrument group.
- Cursor down once to highlight the Instrument, and then turn the dial to choose a desired Sub Instrument.
- Repeat the Steps for any remaining pads if desired.
- Press the DRUM KIT button when you're finished. The new Sub Instrument assignment is saved in the Kit automatically.
