You can’t adjust the volume of the audio signal output from the HDMI THRU connector on the VC-1-DMX. - The audio signal from the HDMI IN connector on the VC-1-DMX is output as-is.
To adjust the level of output coming from the HDMI THRU connector, adjust the volume on your input device instead.
