The S-1 requires a simultaneous START/STOP message with MIDI clock to be received. If the connected MIDI device only sends a START/STOP message, it will not work.
Roland and BOSS do not currently have standalone MIDI foot switches that can simultaneously send START/STOP messages along with MIDI clock.
