Updating the TR-8S system program can add new features and improve performance.
What You’ll Need for the Update
- TR-8S
- Computer
- USB Cable
*Make sure to use a USB cable that supports data transfer. - SD Card
*Used for backup/restore. Format a 32GB or smaller SD card on the TR-8S. Please refer to "Formatting an SD Card (SD CARD FORMAT)" in the TR-8S Owner's Manual.
Follow the steps below:
Back Up to an SD Card
Update procedure includes initialization. If you need to return to your current settings after the update, please back them up on an SD card.
- For backup instructions, refer to “TR-8S, TR-6S: Backing Up Data to SD Card (BACKUP)”
- After the backup is complete, turn off the TR-8S and remove the SD card.
Download the Latest System Program
- Go to https://www.roland.com/global/support/by_product/tr-8s/updates_drivers/ and click on "TR-8S System Program".
- If a newer system program is available than the version currently installed, click the "Download File" button at the bottom of the page to download the file.
- Unzip the downloaded file.
Example:- Windows: Right-click the file > Extract All
- macOS: Double-click the file
Update the System Program
- Turn off the power.
- While holding down the [SHIFT] button, turn on the TR-8S.
The display shows “==== update ====” - Connect the TR-8S to your computer via USB.
- Open the TR-8S drive on your computer.
- Open the unzipped folder (tr8s_sys_vxxx) and locate the TR8S_UP.bin file.
- Drag and drop TR8S_UP.bin onto the TR-8S drive.
- After the copy is complete, eject the TR-8S drive.
- Windows: Safely remove hardware
- macOS: Drag the TR-8S drive to the Trash

Disconnect the USB cable from the TR-8S.
The display will show "Updating..." and the update will begin. When complete, "Update Finished. Turn off power." appears.To update using an SD card instead of a USB cable, replace steps 5–7 above with the following steps:
Note:
When updating via SD card, ensure that the USB cable is not connected.- On your computer, copy the TR8S_UP.BIN file to the root directory (top level) of the SD card.
- Turn off the TR-8S, and insert the SD card into the SD card slot.
- While holding down the [SHIFT] button, turn on the power.
The message "Updating..." appears on the display, and the update process begins.
When the message "Update Finished." appears, the update is complete. - Turn off the TR-8S.
- Restart the TR-8S.
If "Updating Panel" appears after restarting, wait until "Completed" is displayed, then restart the unit once more.
Perform a Factory Reset
Set the reset target to “ALL”. For instructions, refer to “Factory Reset”.
NOTE: If an update includes newly added Patch/Performance tone data, it will be loaded by performing a Factory Reset.
Restore Data from the SD Card Backup
